Join Jennifer Evans Arbo for a surface design and sgraffito carving workshop. Carve a one of a kind design into a bowl shape of your choosing.

Sgraffito means to “scratch” in Italian and workshop participants will draw and carve a design onto a vase shape of their choosing. Sgraffito involves removing layers of slip or underglaze from greenware to reveal the underlying clay body.

Jennifer will demonstrate how she seeks out design inspiration, and how she applies 2-D design concepts to 3-D surfaces using the sgraffito method. After a short demonstration of Jennifer’s sgraffito process, participants will be provided with a tile for practice and a vase form to complete their project (made prior to the workshop by Jennifer). Participants will use underglazes and slips on their greenware ceramic piece during the session as they explore the sgraffito practice themselves.

Participants can choose designs provided by Jennifer or draw their own! Please bring reference images if you have an idea of what you would like to sgraffito. After the workshop, the bowls will be dried, glazed and fired with a clear glaze – this takes 2-4 weeks. Participants will be notified when ceramic pieces are ready to be picked up from the Center.

No experience required. Available for ages 14+ and adults. Make it into a teen and parent outing!

  • All students must comply with the Policies and Procedures found on The Center's website. There will be no refunds for students removed from class for failure to observe The Center’s Policies and Procedures.

  • All materials will be provided for during the workshop.

Please bring reference images if you have an idea of what you would like to sgraffito.
