Emergency Assistance Grants

Learn about the types of emergency assistance available to low-income families and individuals, as well as SSI recipients, with a focus on those households who are not receiving Cash Assistance. Discover how an “emergency” is defined, who qualifies for emergency assistance and when it is appropriate to request an “exception to policy”. Learn when recipients are required to repay these grants, as well as how often they can receive them. Find out how to apply for emergency assistance and how to create a compelling case when requesting shelter arrears.
Target Audience: Social service professionals assisting low-income families and individuals with a financial crisis.
3 contact hours are available for NYS Licensed Social Workers.
Certificates will be issued at the end of the training upon submission of a completed training evaluation and full payment of the training.
Leslie Bailey
Director of Training, Benefits Plus Learning Center
Leslie Bailey, specializing in public benefit programs for over 25 years, oversees all aspects of the Benefits Plus Learning Center training program; from facilitating courses, to designing new courses to the implementation of the continuing education program. She focuses on cash benefit programs such as SSI, SSDI and Cash Assistance and food programs, as well as programs that provide support to working families like child care.
She has authored several chapters for the Learning Center’s premier publication Benefits Plus Online.
Leslie began her career providing benefit counseling to low-income families and individuals. She holds a social work degree from Lehman College.
