Introduction to Oil Painting- Session 2

Discover the joy of oil painting in this welcoming 5-week introductory course led by teaching artist Hana Rusi. Designed for beginners, this class will gently guide you through the fundamentals of oil painting, starting with essential materials, color mixing, and brush techniques. Each week, you’ll build confidence as you explore basic painting methods, learn to work from simple still lifes, and develop an understanding of light, form, and composition. With Hana’s supportive guidance, Monday afternoons will become a creative space to learn, experiment, and develop your own painting style in a relaxed and encouraging environment.
Intro to Oil Paint- Session 2
Class meets 1x per week on Mondays,
February 16th - March 16th, 2026
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
(5 Classes, 15 Hours Total)
- Oil Paint, (my color palette is typically titanium white, burnt umber, mars violet, mars black, yellow ochre, cad yellow medium, cad yellow light, cobalt red, quinacridone red, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue -- I do edit this palette and add viridian green or brighter colors so feel free to use whatever you are comfortable with AS LONG AS you have primary colors (red blue yellow), white, and a range of warm/cool earth tones)
- Paint thinner, recommend Gamsol (less odor than typical thinner)
- Settling Jar or Glass Jar for paint thinner
- Any brushes you are comfortable using
- Rags or paper towels to wipe paint
- Painting surfaces of your choice (Canvas, Panel, etc. at least 11"x14")
- Graphite, pencils (4B and higher recommended for editing a painting)
- Soft Pastels, for exercises in pastels
- Vine charcoal for exercises
- Pad of drawing paper
***Bring what you can! There are affordable techniques and supplies I can introduce to the class that you may not know about.
I can provide materials that I will be teaching with such as shellac, different paper, different painting surfaces. I may ask the class to chip in so I could take a trip to Blick and get good supplies!
