Oil Painting- Paint like the Masters with Jackie Kane

Join this fun and informative way to learn or advance your oil painting skills. Suitable for beginners as well as advanced painters. You will learn the steps to oil painting and create your own copy (or interpretation) of a famous Old Master’s Painting of your choosing. Individual attention will be given to each student’s level of skill. Class will cover how to start a painting, color mixing, mediums, brush techniques, etc. for beginners, while experienced painters can get started on their Master Copy and will be guided along the way.
We will be working with paintings by Master Artists’ whose work is copyright free and therefore now “in the public domain.” Master Copy paintings are created from any of the works of the Old Masters from over 70 years ago. (i.e., Picasso’s work is NOT permitted as it is not in the public domain.) If in question, simply Google, “Are (artist’s name) paintings copyright free? You want the answer to be (Artist’s) paintings are in the public domain.
Bring a photo or print of your chosen Master Artist’s painting to the first class. If undecided you may bring several possibilities to class which we can discuss.

OIL PAINTS:
Please do not purchase Student Grade paints as they will cost more in the long run. Artists’ Professional Grade paints are recommended for their pure pigments, consistent colors, years longer shelf life, less prone to drying out - longer workable time between painting and no fillers.
M. Graham is a great, more affordable Artists’ brand along with Winsor-Newton. Higher priced excellent brands include Michael Harding, Williamsburg, etc. and top of the line Vasari Oil Paints. (Utrecht not recommended.)

We work solvent free without compromise, so no Gamsol, Turpenoid, Mineral Spirits or Liquin.
Painting Mediums / Brush Cleaners solvent free alternatives:
Gamblin Solvent Free Gel in convenient tube / fast drying adds gloss OR M.Graham Alkyd Walnut Oil (fast drying medium)
M. Graham Walnut Oil (to clean brush in between colors while painting)
Master’s Brush Cleaner 2.5 oz. cake - non toxic
For underpainting: Liquitex Heavy Body Artists Acrylic tube of: Transparent Burnt Sienna
OPTIONAL - Liquitex WHITE Gesso for extra layers of priming canvas
BRUSHES: Rosemaryandco.com
Brushes Ivory or Eclipse line recommended in a range of flats or filberts in sizes in 2, 4, 6, 8 . Add a larger flat for backgrounds if you like to work large.
Essential for blending: Rosemary.com MUNDY MOP 3/8" goat hair brush. ADD the larger size if you work large. (Mundy Mops come in five sizes.)
OPTIONAL: 2 or 3” brush for applying (acrylic) GESSO
Add a smaller pointed round for smaller details unless you work loose. Choose other Rosemary brushes to your preference as long as they are for oil painting. This brand is excellent quality at the best price even with shipping.
