For intermediate oil painters familiar with painting from the model in the studio that would like the experience of painting plein air. The class will address the challenges of working out of doors, working with a limited color palette, and working within a limited time constraint. Requirements include basic drawing principles and understanding of composition, form, and atmospheric perspective. The course is intended to combine principles of seeing color in the environment and combining what we see with what we know.

Week 1: Principles of constructing a painting alla prima. Composition and framing your subject. Blocking in your composition.
Week 2: Free Painting
Week 3: Painting deep space, distant vistas. Evaluating the color space. Determining the key of your painting and consider atmospheric perspective and reflected light.
Week 4: Free Painting
Week 5: Painting shallow space. Identify a focal point, the subject and purpose of your painting. Create drama through the manipulation of light. Week 6: Free Painting

  • MATERIALS

    Small (less than 16” in any dimension) stretched canvas, canvas panels, or wood cradled panels. Supports should be primed and prepared for painting. Tinted ground if preferred.

    Digital camera or phone camera

    Variety of Bristle Brushes 1” and smaller, filberts, flats, brights
    Variety of soft sable or manmade brushes 1” and smaller.
    Palette knives
    Oderless Mineral Spirits or equivalent
    Handheld Palette
