Emphasis will be placed on gaining an in-depth understanding of the body’s underlying geometry and anatomical structure. We will work in a tonal fashion to interpret the live model. The eye will be trained to observe, analyze, and execute edges, values, anatomical nuances, and ultimately calligraphy and idealization. Instructor demonstrations and critiques are standard.

  • NOTE: Watts Atelier carries the supplies you will need for class! Students may purchase supplies before class by completing a purchase form and giving it to their instructor.
  • Supplies listed below.
  • Charcoal pencils (get quite a few to start with) Conte1710: B (gold with black shaft)
  • Single-edged razor blades (1 box)
  • Sanding pad (small wood handle with sheets of sandpaper on it.)
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Pad of 18"x24" SMOOTH Newsprint (recommended brands: Pro-Art)
  • Clip board (standard board that will hold an 18"x24" pad.)
  • Note: Do not leave Newsprint in warm places or where the sun will hit it (i.e. car, window, etc.) It will warp and wrinkle! Also, you'll want to get a small cigar sized box for supplies to be transported in.
