Offering a thorough exploration into the technical application of oils, emphasis will be placed on the use and description of the materials needed for oil painting. Topics covered will include how to lay out various palettes, how to mix values and basic color, the various surfaces available and how to prepare them and an exploration of several techniques. Exercises will be done in class from photographs and casts to help ease the tradition to painting. Great class to take before or along with life classes. Frequent instructor demonstrations and critiques are routine.

  • NOTE: Watts Atelier carries the supplies you will need for class! Students may purchase supplies before class by completing a purchase form and giving it to their instructor.
  • Supplies listed below.
  • Painting Grounds
  • Canvas: Fredrix prestretched canvas: red, blue, or green label(more expensive)
  • sizes: 9”x12”-16”x20” are the size perimeters I would like you to stay within.
  • How many? 5 to 10(you will need 10 of course but you may want to buy them as you need them.)
  • *Another possibility is the Fredrix canvas panels. Make sure they are Fredrix.(cheapest option)
  • Brushes
  • An assortment of rounds and flats in synthetic(fake) sable and bristle. (You can also pick up some filberts if you would like.)
  • Brands: this will ultimately be up to you. I like to sample as many brands as I can until I find the ones I like best. Make sure that they are for oil or acrylic and not watercolor brushes.
  • Cleaning Agents
  • Use Gamsol Oderless Mineral Spirits by Gamblin for a cleaning solvent.
  • Empty paint can with handle(hardware or paint store)
  • Purchase a strainer from store same diameter as paint can. Proceed to remove handle(I’ll go over this in class)
  • Brush Cleaner (will go over in class)
  • Palette
  • Wood or plastic

  • Burnt Umber (Windsor Newton)
  • Titanium White
  • Paints: Palette # 2
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Cadmium Red Light

Graciano, Lucas

Lucas has been attending the Watts Atelier since 2001. He has worked in the video game industry working in Visual Development. Some of his game credits include: SOCOM 2 and 3, God of War, Alien Hominid, and Twisted Metal: HO. Lucas now freelances as an illustrator, some of his clients include: Sony Computer Entertainment, SOE, Wizards of the Coast, Reef, Upper Deck, Blizzard, White Wolf, and Quarto Publishing. His work can be seen in “Spectrum 15: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art”, “The Art of World of Warcraft TCG” as well as “Drawing and Painting the Undead”. Lucas was also a finalist in the 2008 Cover Competition for "American Artist Drawing" magazine.
