Designing Drapery in Oil

Class | This class is completed

This class will focus on the seven basic folds and how to paint the variety in different fabrics. We will begin with academic study of the "anatomy" of the fold as well as study when and why they occur.
Moving on we will learn to observe the way the folds are formed in a more "real world" situation as well as how to redesign these folds for better effect and composition. Learning to make sense of the apparent randomness of natural folds is a key ingredient in picture making. We will study a variety of masters and learn how they design folds. We will study painter’s styles, from as loose as Richard Schmid to as refined as William Bouguereau. Class work will be done from handouts, master studies, and from life, teacher demonstrations and critiques are standard.
