Painting from the Masters: Emphasis on the Portrait

Class | This class is completed

One of the age old techniques for students to gain a foothold on their basic painting skills, and learn advanced blending procedures or finishes was copying the masters. Copying the great masters is a way to understand painting procedure learned through the recreation of their techniques. If the painting is thoughtfully reproduced, the student will gain a great deal of insight into how to solve problems in paint when approaching their own work.

Students will choose one Living Master and one Deceased Master. Living Master will be a choice of Morgan Weistling or Z. S. Liang. The Deceased Masters will be Ilya Repin and Ivan Kramskoy. (A student may work from an artist outside the list with instructor approval.) We will study the artist's palette, their approach to starting the painting and how they took it to a finish. Instructor demonstrations and critiques are routine.
