We will sketch out-of-doors at various locations from street scenes to landscapes. Using drafting pencils of various hardnesses as well as the water-based medium of gouache, students will create sketches and vignettes. Composition will be addressed along with technique and execution. Great preparation for plein air painting. All levels encouraged to attend.

  • Supplies listed below.
  • Drawing/ sketch pad preferably hard bound, the smoother the paper the better. (Any size will do, I use sizes between 3.5" x 5.5" and 9" x 12")
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Razor blades or pencil sharpener
  • Plastic ruler
  • Small Triangle (optional)
  • Drafting pencils F, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Papermate Tuff Stuff eraser stick
  • Brushes:
  • Four or five Robert Simmons short handled synthetic White Sables (We will be working smaller so have appropriate sized brushes)
  • Rounds #’s between 1 and 4
  • Flats #’s between 1and 12
  • Other Materials:
  • Paper towels
  • Small Butcher tray
  • Water cup
  • Water bottle
  • Crescent Illustration Board 100 or 110 cold press (optional)
  • Artist tape
  • Portable chair with built in cup holders
  • Sun screen and hat

Gist, Erik

Erik M. Gist received his B.A. from SDSU in 1998. He began studying with Jeff Watts in 1996, three years later he began to teach and has done so ever since.. Erik has worked in the video game industry as a concept designer and 3-D artist and is now working as a freelance illustrator. Erik's clients include Marvel Comics, D.C. Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Disney, Audible, Wizards of the Coast, Upperdeck, Boom! Studios, Palladium Books, Blizzard Entertainment, Viking Childrens Books, Monkey Brain Books, Quart Publishing, and Chiat-Day. His work can be seen in Spectrum: the best in fantastic art including a nomination in 2018, and Aphrodesia: art of the female form 1 . Along with a Spectrum nomination, he has been nominated for an Illie Award, a Pulp Ark Award, a Chesley Award, and multiple Horror Comic Awards including one win.
