For nearly five centuries audiences have been spellbound by the vocal artistry of opera stars. In just the last five years, The Metropolitan Opera has completely revolutionized the way audiences experience this art form with their Peabody and Emmy Award-winning series The Met: Live in HD, featuring live transmissions of Met productions to movie theaters throughout the world. In this monthly educational series we will explore the music and history surrounding the operas soon to be featured at local movie theaters. We will listen and discuss notable arias and scenes from each opera, read translations and learn about the performers. If you have attended the Met Live in HD transmissions before or interested in learning more about this incredible tradition and genre of music this course will provide an excellent overview and enhance your opera experience.

Instructor -- Christopher Schroeder
Boston-based trumpeter, vocalist, composer/arranger, and educator, Chris Schroeder is a musician with diverse interests. As a trumpeter, he has performed with the Concord Symphony, Indian Hill Pops Orchestra, Neponset Valley Brass Quintet, and Boston Opera Collaborative. Prior to this, he performed on Main Street U.S.A at Walt Disney’s Magic Kingdom Resort in Orlando, Florida. Merging his love for chamber music and education, Mr. Schroeder founded Bravado Brass, performing dynamic educational programs for local schools and community centers throughout greater Boston. A multi-facetted vocalist, he has performed as ‘Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni, with the Boston-based a cappella group Similar Jones, and most recently narrator all six voices for Stravinsky’s Histoire Du Soldat for The Boston Conservatory. An active music educator, Mr. Schroeder has worked at Boston College High School as the brass instructor for their Concert Band and jazz Big Band. He currently works with the North End Music and Performing Arts Center and is the Trumpet Instructor in residence for the El Sistema Music Initiative at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Brighton.
